Navigating the Energy Transition: The future of gas in the Mediterranean

On 16 June 2025, the Organisation Méditerranéenne de l’Énergie et du Climat (OMEC), acting as Secretariat of the UfM Working Group on Gas, Emissions Abatement and Hydrogen (formerly the UfM Gas Platform), held its annual conference in Cairo with the support of the European Commission. The event was hosted by EGAS under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The conference brought together over 60 industry leaders, and institutional stakeholders from across the Euro-Mediterranean region—both in person and online—to examine the evolving role of gaseous fuels in the region’s energy transition. Speakers emphasized that while the importance of gas is gradually declining, it remains essential for a secure, just, and sustainable shift to clean energy. Discussions also highlighted the need for emissions reduction, investment in low-carbon technologies, and enhanced regional cooperation.
