Green Energy Technologies Committee Meeting
On June 19, 2024, the Organisation Méditerranéenne de l’Énergie et du Climat (OMEC) held a key meeting of its Green Energy Technologies Committee on 19 June 2025 to discuss the programme of work, on-going activities and future initiatives.
A central theme of the discussions was the presentation of the recently completed flagship publication – Mediterranean Energy Perspectives (MEP 2025), especially the key highlights on renewable energy in light of OMEC scenarios by 2050 horizon.
The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus was another important topic, introduced through findings from the MedECC initiative. The Mediterranean was reaffirmed as a global climate hotspot facing compounded pressures—ranging from water stress and land degradation to food insecurity and biodiversity loss.
One of the major topics addressed was sustainable maritime transport. The preliminary analysis was presented, as part of an ongoing study led by Eni, highlighted the sharp rise in CO₂ emissions from Mediterranean maritime activities.
Finally, updates on two major EU-funded R&D projects were presented—COMPASsCO₂, focused on advanced components for supercritical CO₂ power cycles, and MSA-Trough, which is developing innovative molten salt-based solar concentrators. Both projects emphasize innovation, stakeholder engagement, and open data access.
