Side Event on Nuclear Energy in the Mediterranean
On the occasion of the OMEC Executive Committee and General Assembly meetings, held on 4–5 June in Marrakech, Morocco, and kindly hosted by ONEE, a side event dedicated to Nuclear Energy in the Mediterranean took place.
The study was presented by François Dassa, OMEC Treasurer and Long-Term Programme Director at EDF. The event provided an opportunity to present the study conducted by OMEC with the support of EDF, assessing the potential role of nuclear energy in the Mediterranean energy transition towards 2050. The study maps national nuclear strategies across the region, evaluates the impact of strengthened nuclear pathways within the Mediterranean Energy Model, and examines implications for energy security, power system adequacy, emissions reduction, investment needs, and industrial development. It also identifies the key conditions required for sustainable deployment, including governance and safety, financing and bankability, social acceptance, and fuel cycle and waste management.
