OMEC at Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW)
A panel on “The Role of Natural Gas and LNG in the Security of Gas Supply in Europe / Southern Interconnection,” organized by Energionvest, brought together representatives of government institutions, the energy sector, and the gas industry in Sarajevo on the 24th of September to discuss the future of natural gas, LNG, and regional gas infrastructure in the context of Europe’s energy security and transition. OMEC was represented by Sohbet Karbuz, Director of Hydrocarbons and Energy Security, who delivered the introductory presentation.
The discussion centered on the role of natural gas and LNG in securing reliable gas supplies, their importance for industrial competitiveness, and the potential of gas-fired power generation to support energy systems as aging coal-fired plants are phased out. Particular attention went to the role of gas-fired power plants in providing system balancing and supporting the integration of new energy sources.
Panelists also addressed how the continued use of natural gas can be reconciled with the objective of carbon neutrality by 2050, underscoring the need to balance energy security, economic competitiveness, and long-term decarbonization goals.
