Navigating the energy transition in the Mediterranean Region: Contribution to the New Pact for the Mediterranean
Mark your calendar for the exclusive launch of the OMEC’s flagship publication on Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 (MEP 2025), hosted by IOGP Europe in IOGP premises in Brussels.
Organised one month before the expected adoption of the European Commission’s New Pact for the Mediterranean, this high-level event will offer policymakers and senior stakeholders a strategic lens on the region’s evolving energy landscape and its centrality to EU energy, climate, and external relations priorities.
Event highlights:
- Policy insight: Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 (MEP 2025) provides scenario-based, data-driven foresight to inform regional and EU-level decision-making on the energy transition up to 2050.
- Strategic timing: The event feeds directly into the Pact’s energy pillar, positioning participants at the centre of policy shaping in the Mediterranean.
- High-level dialogue: Two panels will bring together a diverse mix of seasoned EU officials, national policymakers, regional institutions, and industry leaders.
- Competitiveness & security: The discussions will address not only decarbonization, but also energy security, competitiveness, and cross-border cooperation, crucial to stabilizing the region’s energy future.
- Interactive: The agenda is designed to spark alignment and implementation, bridging strategy and delivery.

A deep dive into MEP 2025 insights: energy mix, demand forecasts, and pathways to net-zero by 2050.
The Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 gives us more than projections – it provides direction. As climate deadlines tighten and geopolitical realities evolve, the region must align policy with credible pathways to net-zero. This panel decodes the report’s most strategic insights – from evolving energy demand to regional supply scenarios – and explores how industry and institutions can transform them into investable, scalable action. With voices from governments, OMEC, and the European Commission, this is the roadmap session.
Key questions:
- What are the key takeaways from MEP 2025 for the region’s energy strategy?
- How can policy and industry use these scenarios to drive investment?
Speakers:
Moderated by Lucia Odone, Head of European Government Affairs, Eni
- Ehab Ismail Ameen, Executive Chairman, New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA)
- Houda Baghli, Secretary General, Energy Cities Algeria Association

12:00 – 13:00 | 60 min | Panel 2 – Balancing Energy Security, Competitiveness & Decarbonisation in the Mediterranean: The Role of Gas in the Region
Gas is at the centre of Europe’s energy and security conversation, with a special focus on the Mediterranean region, but its potential could be further leveraged. This panel will focus on the dilemma: how to protect critical energy flows while staying on track with decarbonization goals. We’ll look at new infrastructure, geopolitical bottlenecks, cross-border cooperation, and the role of gas and low-carbon technologies as stabilisers and enablers of the transition. Expect a grounded yet forward-thinking dialogue between governments, producers, and the Commission.
Key questions:
- What are the regional security vulnerabilities in the current energy infrastructure?
- What are the key challenges to making significant progress in the development of low-carbon technologies?
- How can cross-border cooperation enhance both security and sustainability?
Speakers:
Moderated by David Gallardo, OMEC Vice-Chair*
- Cristina Lobillo Borrero, European Commission, DG ENER
- Nicola Rega, Executive Director for Climate Change & Energy, Cefic
- Raafat Elbeltagy, OMEC Honorary Chairman, CEO MOG Energy
